Creating the Low-Cut Running Socks

When we launched our first Performance Running Socks in June 2021, we weren't quite sure how runners would respond.

We had spent months developing and testing them, refining everything from the anatomical fit and cushioning to the yarns and construction. Fortunately, the response was strong from the outset.

But it wasn't long before runners started asking us a different question:

What are you making next?

There were requests for different colours and different styles, but one suggestion kept coming up — particularly from female runners. Could we make a lower-cut running sock — something similar to a no-show running sock?

There were practical reasons for wanting one, of course. Some runners simply prefer the feel and appearance of a sock that sits lower around the ankle.

And then there was another important consideration as summer approached: the runner's tan line.

Apparently, after spending months obsessing over cushioning, grip, ventilation and infrared-responsive yarns, we also needed to consider the consequences of running shorts, sunshine and sock height.

Fair enough.

Starting With What We Already Knew

Developing our original Performance Running Socks had been a lengthy process.

Taking a completely new running sock from the first ideas and CAD designs through prototypes, testing, revisions and eventually production can take around a year.

This time, however, we weren't starting with a blank sheet of paper.

The development of our first running socks had already given us a strong technical foundation. We knew which features worked, we had accumulated thousands of miles of testing, and we had a much clearer understanding of what we wanted an ABSOLUTE360® running sock to be.

That meant the Low-Cut Running Socks could begin with many of those features already established.

The anatomical left and right foot construction remained. So did the seamless toe construction, helping create a smooth fit around the toes.

Targeted cushioning was retained at the heel, toe and forefoot, with NanoGLIDE® used in the heel and toe areas to help manage friction and reduce the risk of blisters. Under the forefoot, our distinctive grip-knit construction was also carried across from the original socks.

Our infrared-responsive yarn was another essential part of the design. Infrared-responsive technology is at the heart of ABSOLUTE360® and what differentiates our performance sportswear from conventional alternatives, so it was an important feature to retain in every new running sock we developed.

The challenge wasn't to reinvent everything we had already developed.

It was to work out what a genuinely low-cut version needed to do differently.

Designing a Sock That Stays Put

Reducing the height of a running sock sounds straightforward.

In practice, removing material from around the ankle creates another consideration: how do you keep a low-cut sock comfortably in position inside a running shoe?

One of our solutions was to introduce front and rear anti-chafe tabs.

The tabs were designed to provide additional protection between the foot and areas of the running shoe that could potentially rub. But they also served another purpose.

Their shape helps the sock hug the ankle, providing a more secure fit and reducing the possibility of the sock slipping down or moving around inside the shoe.

It was a small design detail, but an important one for a sock intended to disappear almost completely inside the running shoe.

Making It Lighter for Summer

Although we wanted the Low-Cut Running Socks to be suitable for year-round running, there was no escaping the reason many runners had asked us for them in the first place.

This was always going to be a sock particularly suited to warmer conditions.

We therefore made the construction across the top of the foot slightly lighter than our Ankle Running Socks and incorporated a fine ventilation mesh to encourage airflow around the foot.

Fine ventilation mesh across the top of the foot helps create a lighter, more breathable construction.

It gave the low-cut sock a lighter feel while allowing us to retain the cushioning, grip and structured fit that we considered important elsewhere.

And, naturally, exposing a little more ankle meant there was less sock available to interfere with that all-important summer running tan.

From the First CAD to the Revised Design

One advantage of working with the same factory and building upon an existing running sock platform was that the development process could move considerably faster.

Our initial CAD design was produced on 27 August 2021. It already contained much of what would define the finished sock: anatomical left and right construction, front and rear tabs, NanoGLIDE® heel and toe areas, grip-knit beneath the forefoot and our infrared-responsive yarn.

There were some minor aesthetic changes, but the underlying concept remained largely unchanged.

There was, however, one technical addition we particularly wanted to make.

We decided to incorporate the same breathable mesh zone around the arch of the foot that had worked so well in our Quarter Running Socks.

It was another example of how developing a product range becomes an evolutionary process. Rather than treating every new sock as an isolated design, we could take features that had already performed well and incorporate them where they made sense.

Less Testing, Not No Testing

Because the low-cut sock shared so much of its DNA with our existing Performance Running Socks, we didn't need to repeat the extensive development and testing programme that had preceded our original launch.

The fundamental construction, materials and key performance features were already known to us.

What mattered this time was confirming that the changes specific to the Low-Cut design worked as intended — particularly the lower profile, lighter upper construction and the front and rear tabs.

That allowed us to shorten the development timeline considerably while still approaching the new sock as a performance product rather than simply creating a shorter version of something we already sold.

Our target was clear: summer 2022.

Another Member of the Running Sock Family

What started as a request from our running community became the next step in the development of the ABSOLUTE360® Performance Running Socks range.

The Low-Cut Running Socks weren't designed to replace the Quarter or Ankle styles. They gave runners another option — one that retained the features we considered fundamental while providing a much lower profile around the ankle.

Anatomical left and right construction. Targeted cushioning. NanoGLIDE® protection. Grip-knit beneath the forefoot. Breathable mesh. Infrared-responsive yarn.

And, of course, front and rear tabs designed to help everything stay exactly where it should.

All packed into considerably less sock.

Which meant that by summer 2022, runners could finally concentrate on the important things.

Like running.

And achieving a slightly more respectable ankle tan.
